Environment

Continue to transport goods, of course, but by burning fewer fossil fuels to lower greenhouse gas emissions!

A few figures to identify the challenges that lay ahead:

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA):
  • global energy consumption is expected to increase by around 60% by 2030
  • 85% of the energy consumed will be fossil fuel-based (coal, gas and oil)
  • over half of the world’s oil production is used for transportation
  • 97% of the energy consumed in the transport sector is oil-based and 25 to 30% of all GHG emissions are generated by transport.
Lowering CO₂  emissions is naturally one of the top priorities included in GeoPost Group’s agenda.

We make a daily commitment to protect the environment.

A few examples

New UK degradable delivery bags offer environmental savings

25 June 2009

As part of its continuous focus on cost saving and also its commitment to reducing its impact on the environment, DPD UK and Interlink Express will now use degradable express delivery bags.

The new bags degrade in 2-3 years, instead of 250 years for the previous version. This is a great achievement because the british subsidiaries sell 14 million bags a year.

The bags are of equal high quality to the previous bag and were sourced from a UK-based manufacturer, who also has manufacturing facilities in China.

Use of this new bag represents another first in the UK market for DPD and Interlink Express, no other carrier is offering this environmental benefit – so it is another differentiator and proof of the UK BUs’ commitment to sustainable development.

Reduction of CO₂ emissions: Chronopost strengthens its commitment

Objectif CO2

On 16th December 2008, Chronopost signed the voluntary charter to reduce CO₂ emissions for its road transportation activities. This charter was set up by the Ministry for Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development and Land Development (MEEDDAT) and by the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME).

Chronopost: a pioneer in clean delivery solutions for city centres
Back in 1998, Chronopost set up clean delivery solutions for city centres with the launch of electric vans from the Chronocity range. Since 2005, Chronopost has been operating two Urban Living Zones in Paris and Toulouse which have significantly reduced the noise, traffic and atmospheric pollution caused by its activities in these two towns. The last ten years of involvement and commitment have borne encouraging results. Between the first half of 2007 and the first half of 2008, the company has reduced its C02 emissions by 13.5% per parcel.

Chonopost commitment in figures
Chronopost has signed the charter for 3 years. This involves 4 key elements: vehicles, fuel, drivers and transport flow organisation. Chronopost has already implemented this action plan and since January 2008 has been providing annual tracking reports to ADEME.

  • Vehicles: Chronopost will accelerate the modernisation of its vehicle fleet to meet the latest Euro standards. The objective is to have 46% of the fleet compliant to Euro standards before the end of 2010.
  •  Fuel: the aim is to reduce the fuel consumption of Chronopost vehicles through better organised rounds, improving the load and group rate, eco-driving and using more fuel efficient vehicles. Between 2007 and 2010, Chronopost has committed to reducing the average consumption of its fleet by at least 5%.
  • Drivers: Chronopost is currently training its employees in eco-driving using company vehicles (all staff will be trained by 2010). Chronopost will use this training to encourage every day actions to save the environment through an awareness campaign targeting all employees.
  • Transport flow organisation: the reorganisation of Chronopost’s industrial tool will help reduce empty running by decreasing the number of routes, using mobile cases and moving to bulk transportation. These modifications to the transport network will help Chronopost reduce the number of kilometres travelled per parcel by over 5% in 3 years.
